About Our Sponsorship

BHP Billiton is an Official Sponsor of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG). As well as being the Diversified Minerals and Medals Sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, BHP Billiton is also an Official Sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Chinese Olympic Team. In line with our sponsorship agreement, BHP Billiton will provide financial support to the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games and supply the raw materials for the Olympic and Paralympic medals.

XXIX Olympiad

While the majority of competition will be held in Beijing, some events, including football (soccer), sailing, and swimming's new marathon 10km events, will be held in other Olympic cities including Qingdao, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao. Equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong which marks the second time (in the same edition of Olympic Games) that two National Olympic Committees have hosted the Games.  Learn more about the Olympic Games..

The 2008 Summer Paralympic Games, the thirteenth Paralympics, will be held in Beijing, China from September 6 - 17, 2008. Mainland China will host the majority of competition, while equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong and sailing events in Qingdao. Learn more about the Paralympic Games..

  • A total of 37 competition venues will be in use for the Games
  • The National Stadium, also known as the “Bird’s Nest,” is Beijing’s largest stadium and has a seating capacity of 91,000
  • Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games
  • A total of 70,000 volunteers will be needed for the Olympic Games and another 30,000 for the Paralympic Games
  • The Olympic Flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece according to tradition on March 25, 2008. It will travel across Greece before arriving in Beijing six days later on March 31, 2008.
  • The Olympic torch relay will last 130 days and travel 137,000 kms
